Simple Swaps To Up Your Sustainability Game
Did you know more than eight million tonnes of plastic are dumped into our oceans every single year?!
According to not-for-profit conservationist group Plastic Oceans, we are producing over 300 million tonnes of plastic annually – half of which is for single-use purpose only. We were pretty shocked by these facts – and they gave us the kick in the butts we needed to up our sustainability game!
As more people become conscious of the future of our beautiful planet (and rightly so!), reducing the amount of plastic waste you generate is also becoming a lot easier.
Starting small is the way to go and can make a huge difference… because let’s be honest, not all of us have the motivation or time to build a compost worm farm in our backyard – despite how much we might want to!
We’ve shortlisted our top tips to show you just how easy it can be to swap out every day products for a more sustainable choice, which in turn can have a really positive impact on the environment and make you feel like you’re doing your little bit, one step at a time.Go reusable for your morning coffee!
One of the easiest and most common ways to cut down your waste is to use a reusable coffee cup. Think of how many coffees you have a week, a month, a year! And now think about how much waste that produces. It’s not a pretty thought. Reusable coffee cups are becoming more and more accessible – you can even grab one from Kmart or Target! We’re fans of the ones from Frank Green, but also love supporting local artists and their hand painted ceramic cups. It’s always a good idea to have more than one so you’re always covered. The BC Team even has spares in the office in case anyone forgets theirs! If you’re an iced drink kinda gal – it’s time to suck it up and accept that straws are kind of unnecessary! That said, for those of us who don’t like the cold feeling on our front teeth, using or purchasing a reusable metal straw is the way to go. They come in a variety of colours and materials, and we’re loving these ones from Hello Green that help us achieve our simple sustainable goal.
Goodbye glad wrap, hello bees wax
For a biodegradable solution to single use plastic wrap, we suggest beeswax wraps instead! With the wonders of online shopping, you can have some serious fun while exploring the possibility of saying goodbye to glad wrap. We love searching for a great investment and instead of having to repurchase single use plastic wrap, beeswax wraps can be reused for 6 - 12 months or even longer with the right care. The colourful range at Bees Wax Wraps features dozens of gorgeous patterns that come in all shapes and sizes! We also love Sustomi and they have a lot of other reusable food storage options available! Think of it as a small outlay that can repay the environment and your pocket at the same time.

Go glass for your leftovers!
We all face the dilemma of figuring out what to have for lunch at work, so what better way to help the environment and ourselves at the same time than to pack up your dinner from the night before in a reusable container that isn’t made of plastic? It’ll save you some bucks too! Opting for reusable containers made of glass is our top recommendation, which reduces your green footprint by a mile.
